Proton’s cars usually don’t get much time on TopSpeed because they have traditionally been, well, boring. But the economy carmaker has always had an ace up its sleeve: it owns Lotus. Now it may be using the British brand to help it dominate the rally car circuit.
It seems there is a perfect storm brewing. Subaru is dropping out of the World Rally Championship, which is leaving a big hole for a new competitor to fill. Proton has already got a racer called the Satria Neo S2000 (based on the Lotus-tuned R3 Satria). What can really bring this all together is the driver, and ex-Subie champion Petter Solberg is rumored to fill that role for Proton.
BMW makes a M3 and a M5, but it doesn’t make an M7. That’s where Alpina comes in with the B7.
The tuner has a long standing close relationship with BMW, so now that there is a new 7-Series out, the new B7 close on its heels. In fact, reports now say that the car will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The new Alpina B7 should be powered by a modified version of BMW’s 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine delivering around 507HP (7 hp more than the current B7).
We’re just getting settled with the latest update to the Porsche 911 (997) Carrera, but we also know the 998 is just around the corner. We’ve already seen the spy shot of the future Turbo version out for a little testing, and now we see the convertible testing to make sure the new top can handle the cold stuff.
What’s really great from this spy shot is the shape of the new convertible roof. The next 911 Cabriolet may use a lower and flatter roof, which is reminiscent of the 356 Speedster. How much will this drop-top take from the classic Porsche design? We should know by 2011 when this new 911 hits the streets.
If you’re going to go retro, why not go all the way? Dodge revealed a special edition called the Challenger R/T Classic, which takes even more elements from the original 70s Challenger.
The price for this extra throwback is $34,005, which is a $3,460 premium over the base price of a regular Challenger R/T. But with this extra cash comes some extra goodies. This includes dual throwback A-line body-side R/T stripes, ‘Challenger’ fender badging in classic script, large 20-inch polished-chrome heritage wheels with all-season performance tires, classic egg-crate grille with heritage ‘R/T’ badge, body-color rear spoiler and chromed fuel-filler door.
Looks like Dubai likes its chromed Mercedes. Back in October we saw a chromed SLR in the desert city, and now we have pics of a C63 AMG going for the ultimate bling.
The look-at-me-shine of this car just can’t match the appeal of a simple matte black paint job. Always remember the understatement can say so much more.
We recently confirmed the Nissan 370Z roadster will make its world debut at the New York Auto Show and also saw the patent sketches of the car. It’s not too hard to imagine what drop top car will look like. The exterior of the 350Z and the 370Z coupes don’t appear that different, so squinting at a 350z roadster will give you a pretty good idea about what will be in New York.
But before you go straining your eyes, GlobalMotors went ahead and did the work for you. It may not look like a lot of new bits, but we’re suckers for an excuse to bring up the 370Z’s great 332 hp 3.7-liter V6 engine.
We know the Audi RS5 is close to its debut. It’s already been caught a few times without any disguise. Judging by the license plate, this video is likely of the same unmasked car we saw back in October. That doesn’t matter too much because even if the sight is not new, the sound is. There is something very sweet about hearing the 450 hp 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8 being let out of its cage.
As reported at the beginning of the month, BMW is preparing a Motorsport version for the future 1-Series. The folks over at AutoBild took some of the current 1-Series car elements and mixed it with some classic elements of the 2000 and 2002 model cars to come up with this rendering.
Some speculation has this car as just a special edition of the 135i model. But AutoBild thinks the car may be more purpose-built. Possibly this car could come with no rear seats, a carbon roof like the M3 and lightweight doors and dampers. The engine could be a turbocharged 2.0 or 2.2-liter four cylinder making 300 hp. While that is the same power as in the 135i, the weight savings from the lighter materials, removed equipment and smaller engine would still give the car exceptional performance.
Dust hasn’t even begun settling on the new Mercedes E-Class sedan, and there is already a body kit for it. This one comes straight from AMG, but don’t get too excited. If you want engine modifications, you’ll have to wait for the E63 AMG.
The package consistis of an AMG front apron with large cooling air intakes, AMG side skirts and AMG rear apron. The tailpipes are also altered into various ovals or rectangles, depending on the size of the car’s engine.
Not to be outdone by the Nissan GT-R’s romp on a snowy Nürburgring, the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 has its turn in the cold stuff. The Lambo may not get to slide around on a famous German road, but the GT-R didn’t have Fifth Gear star Tiff Needell behind the wheel.
