Monday, January 26th, 2009

Tis the season for supercars in the snow. This week we’ve already seen two all-wheel drive juggernauts, the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 and the Nissan GT-R, take to the slick stuff. Now is time for the ultimate four-wheel drive exotic to weigh in, the $1.5 million Bugatti Veyron.

Alfa Romeo prepares a sports coupe

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Just because the world is focusing on smaller cars, doesn’t mean they can’t be fun. For example Alfa Romeo will not only be using the MiTo platform to make the ultimate hot hatch MiTo GTA, but will now also use the little guy as the basis for a new sports coupe.

Rumored to be called the Junior (the origional name for the MiTo), the new coupe is rumored to share parts with Lancia’s possible rebirth of the Fulvia. Although the Junior isn’t expected to get the MiTo GTA’s 240bhp 1.8-liter turbocharged engine, it should be able to get around on a 1.4-liter turbo four cylinder making 130 hp.

BMW M Coupe - Carpet Edition

Monday, January 26th, 2009

German cars are known for bring precision machines, but some people think the cars lack personality or soul. Since nothing gives that warm cuddly feeling like a nice oriental rug, one owner decided to use the pattern to make this first generation M Coupe more personable.

A paint job like this would obviously cost more then the car is worth, so this is a wrap. With what basically amounts to a big sticker, the owner was able to transform this from a 321 hp slick blue machine into living room furniture.

Ferrari trike

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Not to be outdone by a mini Lamborghini ATVs, Ferrari went for a mini model with one less wheel and more horsepower that the little Lambos. Suzuki built the 1300 Hayabusa Trike in cooperation with the prancing horse for what we expect is a little more than a styling exercise. But a very cool one at that.

We don’t have the skill set to read the spec sheet (it’s in Japanese), but it’s a pretty good guess that this is powered by the same 180 hp 16-valve four cylinder engine that is available in the production Suzuki 1300 Hayabusa motorcycle.

U.S. Hybrid Sales Down 9.9% for 2008

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Despite the fact that hybrid vehicles saw increased publicity in 2008 from record-high gasoline prices, sales of the fuel-efficient vehicles in the United States were actually down 9.9 percent over 2007. Vehicles like the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic saw record sales when gasoline prices topped $4.00 per gallon, but when the price dropped and the economy started to really slide customers shied away from the price premium (usually a few thousand dollars) associated with hybrid cars. Compared to the whole industry falling by 18 percent, the hybrid market remained relatively strong and posted a slight gain in market share rising from 2.17% of total sales in 2007 up to 2.38% for 2008.

With its iconic Prius leading the charge, Toyota dominated the hybrid market by gobbling up 76.5 percent of the market’s share, but its overall sales of hybrid models were down 12.5 percent. Combined, the Big 3 accounted for less than 11 percent of the market, but General Motors and Ford are both hard at work ramping up their respective hybrid lineups with new products set to debut this year. Chrysler, on the other hand, sold just 81 hybrid vehicles in 2008 and recently shuttered the plant that built its only two hybrid models: the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen. Thanks to the numerous additions of hybrids across four of its brands, GM’s hybrid sales nearly tripled in 2008.

SSC Ultimate Aero EV - 200 miles with 10 minutes recharging!?

Monday, January 26th, 2009

We like stuff that comes from Shelby SuperCars (SSC) because its fast. The Ultimate Aero currently holds the record for world’s fastest production car at 256 mph, and the 2009 car is promised to be even faster. So when SSC announced it will build the world’s fastest electric car last summer, we thought we might have a reason to start getting excited about EV cars (no offense Tesla).

SSC decided to release a few details about its progress on the electric supercar, and its having us check the calendar to make sure it isn’t April Fool’s Day. For starters, SSC is keeping with its basic principle and keeping the electric car’s charge time fast; a hard to believe ten minutes.

Uh oh, looks like another Asian nation is looking to dominate the world of drifting cars. This Hyundai Genesis Coupe is burning its tires around corners for a Super Bowl ad. If you think the behind the scenes is talking too much, and you just want to see the action, the ad will premiere next week (obviously).

Fiat 500 coming to USA?

Monday, January 26th, 2009

The Chrysler/Fiat tie-up has been getting enthusiasts in the U.S excited. We all knew that it was finally a matter when, not if, Fiat products would return to the U.S. Now we may know when that actually is, as plans are underway to have the Fiat 500 in Chrysler delearships for the 2010 model year.

2011 Mercedes CLS spied again

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Its only been a week since we’ve seen a spy shot of the next Mercedes CLS, but its back again. This time the body cladding is doing a good job to hide the sedan/coupe because this one almost looks like a Toyota Camry.

This example was caught performing cold weather testing in Sweden. The 2011 CLS should be positioned between the E and S-Class in the Mercedes lineup. Because the current CLS is based on the E-Class, it’s likely that the next generation will be using a stretched form of the E-Class chassis. Engines choices could range internationally from a turbo four-cylinder and top out with a V8 in the AMG model. Mercedes may also offer the engine from the S400 BlueHybrid in the CLS.

2009 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

The world is an unfair place. While most of us save every penny to possibly purchase a Porsche 911, there are others out there who just take the little coupe racing. For those select few, the bar may have just been raised. Porsche revealed the 2009 911 GT3 RSR.

Compared to last year’s model, this RSR has a redesigned front end with large air outlets on the front hood. Also, the aerodynamics and air ducts were redesigned for better air flow, the rear wing is more adjustable, and the body and some interior materials (like wiring harnesses) are lighter than the 2008 GT3 RSR.
